The utility of Soxhlet Extraction



So what is a Soxhlet apparatus? It is a laboratory equipment or apparatus that has been created for the processing of particular types of solids. The original purpose of this apparatus was to take out or extract the lipid contained in a solid material. Although that was the original inventor with regards to its capabilities, the use is not merely limited to that ability of extracting lipids or fat.

When any solid has a limited ability to dissolve in a solvent and the impurity also will not dissolve in the solvent, which is when a Soxhlet extraction apparatus maybe used. If the compound in questions can be dissolved appreciably in a solvent, then, simple filtering can take out the compound and the insoluble extract.

Generally a solid material that contains a particular compound is placed within a thimble that can be contrived from a filter paper. This is then placed into the primary chamber of the Soxhlet extractor. When heat is applied, the solvent will evaporate into a gaseous state. This gas is, then, cooled with a condenser, which is collected in a sample tube. Over a period of time, the complete lipid contained in the material is removed and the solid is rendered free from any lipid content.

The use of the Soxhlet extractor apparatus is principally used to process certain types of solids. With this device, it is possible to treat a sample for hours and days with the intent of extracting compounds of interest. This is a very useful apparatus used by the chemists in the sampling, analysis, and testing and quality control related process. These are available in a large range of sizes as well as with required accessories.

It is with a Soxhlet apparatus that a high degree of efficiency in the extraction process can be achieved, and also, makes it possible for a higher level of control over the materials being tested. When in use, at every cycle of operation, only a portion of the non volatile compound is dissolved in the compound. The advantage of this apparatus is that many portions of the solid are not processed, but a single batch is recycled to get results.

Soxhlet Apparatus: Extract it easily



There are a number of facilities created by science, which has made life easy and comfortable.There are a number of equipments and instruments created by science, which have helped them to create more tools for an easy life. There are many tools, which help scientists to have ease in the process in the laboratory also. The Soxhlet Apparatus is one of such apparatus, which helps lab professionals in the extraction process in a chemical laboratory.This apparatus is used to extract solid elements of one type from another type of element. It can be better understood with its functionality in the lab, which helps in various chemical processes and experiments.
How was it invented?
The name of this apparatus is derived from its inventor Franz Von Soxhlet who accidentally invented it. The primary cause of this apparatus and function, is to extract the lipid elements from the solid material, which means if there is any lipid element in the solid, and if it is put through this extractor, it will be able to provide two different elements at the end of the process. With time, the usages of this apparatus are increased and now one can also separate solid elements from other solid elements. When it comes to extraction, one cannot think any other instrument than soxhlet that is the image of this apparatus in the world of chemistry and science.
The Procedure of extraction:
     In case,  the components, which have very limited solubility in some of the solvents, then, the use of this apparatus is very much required. If the impurity of the chemical mixture is not soluble in the solvent, then this apparatus can separate two solid components, which is essential for the process.
     The procedure of this apparatus is much easier to operate. One just needs to place desired solid material inside the apparatus. It is required to be wrapped in filler paper, which is later placed in the main chamber of the instrument. Then it is put on the flames with the solid element in it which will allow an extraction procedure. Then a condenser is used for the purpose of condensation.
     Now this apparatus is heated on the flames which creates evaporation of a solid material and collection of it provides with solid material extracted from the material provided. When the chamber is filled with vapor which has solid material, dissolve the soluble part, and thus, collects the material.
     Now, the vapors are condensed in the condenser of the extractor and the material which is dissolved is collected in it. The rest of the solvent moves back to the flask provided for it.
     To get the desired result, the process is repeated several times. Nowadays, there are many other techniques used for extraction purpose, but this is the primary process, which has evolved as the basic method of all available extraction methods.

Soxhlet Extractor: The Well Known Apparatus For Extraction



There are many processes required in the field of chemistry. For different processes,  different sorts of instruments are also used. Not only that, there are many special apparatuses which are made for specific purposes and these apparatuses have special reasons for which they are made. Not only that they are made in a specific way which can be understood by the people of the chemical sector only. For a layman, neither these things are enough understandable nor known to him also. So a layman has no concern with it at all. However, since the evolution of chemistry as a separate branch of science, different instruments are invented by different scientists. The soxhlet apparatus is also one of such apparatuses.  This apparatus was invented by A scientist namely Franz von Soxhlet in the year 1879, and from his name only, the apparatus is given the name as Soxhlet Apparatus.  This apparatus is basically invented for extraction of different lipids. However, with the passage of the time its use is no more limited to the extraction of lipids only. As per the use of this apparatus, it is basically used to extract lipids in such cases where the desired compound possesses  limited scope of solubility in a solvent and  the derived impurities are also insoluble in the same. However, if the compound has high solubility, one can derive the typical results with simple filtration also.
The Usage and Process:
In this typical process of extracting the desired solid, compound is held in a typical container which is usually porous and with required concentrated solvent. While the compound changes into vapors, it keeps the dissolved compound with it and accordingly it is condensed separately. Usually this is a common process, which is done into the condenser. The porous container which held the solid compound sample will also hold solid samples, which are not soluble in the solvent. So now the distill pot keeps the required, desired concentrated material only. Thus, these are the three parts of the extractor, which basically form the extractor.
The result:
Now as a part of the process, mild heat is provided to the extractor by direct flames below which in turn heats the container and the solvent starts to change into vapors. The process of condensation of these liquids converts the collected sample, and this is the process how the two materials in solid forms are separated. For various sorts of materials, various solvents are used.
The condenser is provided cooling through the ice so that the temperature is lower enough to condense the liquid, which is evaporated.
Utility:
This extractor is commonly used for extraction of fat and oil from different things. In this process of extraction of fat from a solid compound, commonly an organic solvent is used. Then, this solvent is provided heat to change it into vapor form. As the vapor goes up and then its condensation changes it again into liquid form. It creates in small droplets, which takes away the fat content of the compound. This process is constantly repeated for almost 15 to 20 minutes.
